[DEI in 5] Biweekly DEI News
The Latest Episode of DEI in 5
ICYMI, last week’s DEI in 5 live discussion, definitely check out the replay. I was joined by two of my fellow DEI consultants, Clarissa “Clo” Fuselier of Inclusion.Logic and Caren Young of The Professional Adult. We talked about unpacking our own biases, or -isms, as DEI practitioners. It was a very honest and raw conversation—I’m personally looking forward to having more of these. Check it out below or by visiting my YouTube channel.
Also! This Thursday, September 7th, Caren will be joining me at 12 PM EST for another live episode. The question we’ll be asking ourselves: 🤔 How might we continue to cultivate meaningful and respectful workplace discussions, despite the increasing visibility of conflicts and divisions, both online and in-person?

DEI News Updates
Research
Diversity And Inclusion In The Nordics: A Foundational Assessment, August 2023 [Diversify Consult]: “The survey aimed to identify any disparities or barriers to inclusivity and found that there are notable differences in how individuals experience and respond to discrimination. The workplace turned out to be the place where respondents experience most discrimination in general. Nonetheless, participants report having faced discrimination, both in the workplace and in their everyday lives, particularly based on race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, and disabilities. In contrast, those living with disabilities or chronic illnesses reported that they felt more included in the workplace than in civic or community environments.”
Corporate Diversity Initiatives: Overwhelmingly Supported Across Racial, Ideological, and Generational Lines [Black Economic Alliance Foundation]: “Data from the survey clearly indicate that the vast majority of Americans across racial, ideological, and generational lines: Believe that corporate America should reflect the racial diversity of America; Support businesses taking active steps to make sure that companies reflect America’s racial diversity; and
Agree that racial diversity in business leads to greater profitability and innovation.“
Institutional courage buffers against institutional betrayal, protects employee health, and fosters organizational commitment following workplace sexual harassment [PLOS]: “Workplace sexual harassment is associated with negative psychological and physical outcomes. Recent research suggests that harmful institutional responses to reports of wrongdoing–called institutional betrayal—are associated with additional psychological and physical harm. It has been theorized that supportive responses and an institutional climate characterized by transparency and proactiveness—called institutional courage—may buffer against these negative effects.”
Society & Life
Horrified Florida residents wake up to anti-Semitic flyers in their driveways in latest vile incident in the Sunshine State after Nazi march [Daily Mail]: “Residents in Okeechobee County found packets with pellets inside and anti-Semitic rhetoric on a flyer place within the bag. Local sheriff's office told residents not to pick up the bags without gloves. Flyers come after Nazi rallies were held in other Florida cities over the weekend.”
DeSantis-controlled Disney World district gets rid of all diversity, equity and inclusion programs and staffers [NBC]: “The Central Florida Tourism Oversight District said in a statement that its diversity, equity and inclusion committee would be eliminated, as would any job duties connected to it. Also axed were initiatives left over from when the district was controlled by Disney supporters, which awarded contracts based on goals of achieving racial or gender parity.”
Workplace & Employee Experience
As a Black Man, I Can’t Just “Leave My Troubles at the Door” After the Tragedy in Buffalo [HBR]
Return-to-Office Is a $1.3 Trillion Problem Few Have Figured Out [Bloomberg]: “Asian nations did a better job keeping Covid-19 under wraps in the pandemic’s first year, so people there didn’t get as accustomed to working from home, making it easier to transition back to office life, researchers found. Europe’s habits vary widely — the UK has one of the highest rates of remote work, and France one of the lowest — but several of its countries also are leading the way with laws enshrining flexible schedules. Then there are places such as the US, where policymakers have stayed largely silent, leaving bosses and employees to navigate the changes on their own.
Health & Medical
(Free Webinar) Breaking Down Barriers to Emergency Department Care for People with Sickle Cell Disease [CDC]: “Many people with SCD have reported unique barriers and challenges, such as long wait times and lack of provider knowledge related to SCD, when seeking treatment in emergency care settings. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) held a webinar for healthcare providers, policymakers, and SCD advocates that explored the intersection of SCD and emergency care.”
